Relocation & child custody

People move all the time – for all different reasons.  Sometimes it is a new job or perhaps for just a change of scenery.  Moves aren’t a problem for many people, but for divorced parents, things can become complicated.

Moving to another city or state may have a big impact on your child custody or visitation rights.  It is not unusual for the courts to get involved in custody matters when the custodial parent wants to move with his or her child.  As a matter of fact, there are certain cases when the court can forbid you from moving at all.  Each parent has legal rights when it comes to visitation and custody of their children. Both parents must agree to the move.

Relocating is a big decision.  As parents, you must consider the impact it could have on your child.  The idea of not seeing his or her father or mother on a regular basis can be an emotionally traumatic event for a child.  You must work together to make the right decision.
