When you are ordered to pay spousal support, it feels like you’ve been doing it forever – it will never end. Don’t get alarmed; California law does not favor indefinite spousal support.
The law allows you to revisit your spousal support order. You can take action to reduce or eliminate your spousal support obligation. If you are currently paying too much support, you must take action in order for something to be done – you must file for a modification in your payments. Conditions that would allow you to request a modification is when there are significant changes in your circumstances, such as losing your job or an illness.
Did you know that spousal support can be terminated automatically if your former spouse remarries, becomes self-supporting, moves in with a lover, or dies?
