Domestic partners and health benefits

California recognizes the thousands of same-sex marriages that took place before Proposition 8 passed.  By registering as a domestic partnership with the Secretary of State, signing an affidavit, and filing a Declaration of Domestic Partnership, you can enjoy the benefits that California law affords you, according to the California Family Code.

The California Insurance Equality Act prohibits insurance companies from distinguishing between married couples and domestic partners by providing them with identical plans.

If you are in a domestic partnership and your partner’s employer will not provide you with health benefits, contact an experienced Orange County Family Law attorney who can help you with the proper steps.
