Divorce and child support

Every parent wants the assurance that his or her child will get everything he or she needs.  This is especially true when divorce breaks up a family.  That assurance requires financial support.

When a couple divorces and there are children involved, the family court considers the following factors when determining child support:

  • The income of each parent
  • The parent’s earning potential if currently unemployed
  • The age of each child
  • The needs of each child

After the child support amount is determined and agreements have been made, there is not always a guarantee that the paying parent will make timely payments, or pay at all.
