After divorce, who gets the child tax break?

Tax issues can get complicated and complex after divorce.  For one thing, which parent is allowed to claim valuable child-related taxbreaks?  In certain cases, it depends on which parent is allowed to claim the child as a dependent.

When taxes are concerned, the parent who has custody for the greater part of the year (the custodial parent) can claim the child.  However, an exception allows the custodial parent to give the noncustodial parent the right to claim the designed child as a dependent.
