Terminating a domestic partnership

A California domestic partnership is a legal relationship available to same-sex couples.  It is also available to opposite-sex couples in which at least one party is 62 years old.  It gives the couple the same rights, benefits, responsibilities, obligations, and protections as married couples.

Family Code Section 297(a) states, “Domestic partners are two adults who have chosen to share one another’s lives in an intimate and committed relationship of mutual caring.”  In continues with Family Code Section 297(b), “A domestic partnership shall be established in California when both persons file a Declaration of Domestic Partnership with the Secretary of State.”
