Hidden assets

Dividing property during divorce is difficult enough without one of the spouses trying to conceal or hide marital assets.  It is not only wrong; it is illegal and unethical.  However, it is more common than many people realize.

Protecting assets in a divorce is very important, especially if one spouse is out for revenge.  If you are thinking about divorce but have not yet told your spouse, the best way to protect marital property is to remove personal property to a safe location first.

Spouses may hide money through:

·     Employment – delay bonus, hide retirement benefits

·     Relatives or Friends – transfer money into another person’s account

·     Financial accounts – transfer money into foreign accounts
